    Hi Everyone

My 2019 (119/250) (450 miles) Cafe Racer occasionally lets me down, in that the RFID fob will not stop OR start the ignition. I have 4 programmed key fobs that all work perfectly when the sensor is working. However, from time to time the fob (any of the four) just will not either stop the ignition or start up the ignition. I have tried a myriad of techniques to awaken the sensor under the seat to no avail. Stopping the engine is the most irritating. I am forced to use the kill button, leaving the ignition on until the battery flattens. When the fob fails to start the ignition, it usually takes more than 30 minutes of repeatedly trying until it works. Thankfully, my failures have been on leisure rides in quiet places and no time constraints.

Are these fob/sensors just temperamental or is something beginning to fail on my bike. I must say that this method of switching the ignition on/off is the worst idea CCM came up with for a “simple” motorcycle. A simple switch would have been infinitely more reliable.

    Comments please …

Hi, I think the max number of fobs the “motogadget m lock” can remember is 3, Thant’s not including the red master ! the sensor also has a sleep mode (power saving ) you have to hold a fob against it for 2 secs to wake it up . I have also moved my sensor to the right hand side of the bike , below the tank , I don’t like using the kill switch !

    Hi Martin

Yes, you are right; just 3 programmed fobs for use and all 3 work. I know you have to hold it there to wake the sensor up, but it just doesn’t wake up. I hold the fob in position for at least 10 seconds at a go and also move it around gently against the tail tidy. When it works properly, it activates instantly the fob is in position. I did wonder if temperature had a bearing. When mine has failed it has been quite hot days and recently on cold days (around 6 degrees). I hadn’t thought of moving it and I am grateful for your photo. Can I just ask, does it not get too hot near the top of the engine?

    Regards

    Garry

    Hi, Garry
Operating temp is -20 to +80 (I looked it up) I’m adding a link for Motogadget site , they have downloads for installing , with useful info. I wouldn’t put my hand on a warm engine , the only time I notice any heat is when the fan comes on (stationary for a while) you’ll feel the heat on your legs.

Ps. When the sensor is active , ignition relay on , there is a red led that lights up on the back of the sensor .

    Hi, Gary
PPs. Remembered I have one on a shelf , I’m planning to use it on another bike so that one key fits all and I always have my key on me (I have a RFID chip in my right hand). pic of what’s in the box is to show you the back of the sensor .

Thank you for the extra info and link to the manual and downloads. So, temperature is not the issue. Looking at the kit, I do wonder if the relay might be occasionally sticking. If the relay sticks, no ignition and the appearance of it not working at all. I’m having a post run-in service early next year, I might get them to check out this relay. Unfortunately for me, I cannot get this bike serviced (or repaired) by CCM techs. I live on the Isle of Wight and they won’t come. Even when I had an indicator fault under warranty, they wouldn’t meet me in Portsmouth to repair it. Instead, I had to take it to a motorcycle garage on he island and they did the repair. Anyway, my guy on the island is very skilled, so I’m not that bothered.

    Again, thanks Martin.

    Hi, Garry
I was going to suggest listening for the relay , you will only hear the fuel pump or the starter motor ! There are two large relays under the front of the tank , one each side and one of them is for the m lock , motogadget recommend fitting a capacitor inline if the starter motor takes a lot of battery power , it stops the ignition relay dropping out when the starter is cranking the engine, (shouldn’t be necessary on a spitfire), it’s a shame you don’t have the benefit of a CCM mobile tech , I was very impressed and that’s not easy , why can’t they meet you on the mainland , I would make some more calls and tell them to make it happen.
