Stephen Sword Gives The Buildbase CCM Racing Team Its First British Championship Win For 33 Years.
Buildbase CCM Racing and Stephen Sword were celebrating their first British Championship race win for 2010 at the Maxxis British MX1 Motocross Championship round at Foxhills on Sunday. It was 33 years ago since the last time a CCM won a British Championship race and this event marks a line in the sand for the Buildbase CCM Racing team.
Evgeny Bobrychev took the holeshot in race one with Stephen Sword in second followed by the rest of the pack. Bobrychev set the early pace opening a 5 second gap over Sword until the half way stage when Stephen got the bit between his teeth and slowly reeled in the Russian Championship leader.
Half way round the last lap Steve had closed the gap to one bikes length and made a massive leap down one of the fearsome Foxhill downhills to carry enough speed to make a pass at the next corner. The Buildbase CCM Racing rider put in a blinding lap to cross the line in first place. After the race Steve said, “I felt comfortable throughout the race and was able to keep Bobrychev in sight at all times. I knew there were some places on the track where I was quicker than him so I left it until the end of the race to make my move. It’s great to be back at full strength.”
The second race turned out to be a disaster for Steve as a cart-wheeling bike hit him from behind in turn one and knocked him off the bikeas he was about to exit the corner in third place, two further crashes on lap one meant Steve had to race from dead last to 9th place at the flag. Buildbase CCM Racings’ Tom Church got a flying start and exited turn 1 in second place. After lap one TC found himself in 4th place which he kept until the last turn of the race when Parker managed to sneak past to give him a 5th place finish.
Race three and the Buildbase CCM team got a dream start with Steve leading Tom out of turn one with the rest of the pack chasing close behind. Steve managed to pull a 5 second gap over Bobrychev who had by now passed Tom for 2nd, closing the gap within 5 laps, Bobrychev made his pass on Steve. Knowing he had the speed, Steve pressured Bobrychev into a mistake a lap later and made the pass to take the lead once again. Two laps later and Bobrychev took the lead to pull out a 4 second gap over Steve. Not content with second, Steve closed the gap to a bikes length but just didn’t have enough time to pass for a win and was forced to settle for second. Tom put in a solid performance to take fourth place at the finish.
Buildbase CCM’s sporting Director Dave Thorpe commented, “it’s great to see both riders putting in massive efforts today. It was only a matter of time before Steve took his first win of the season and it wont be his last. Tom has shown also that he isn’t far off either. The next target is to take the overall at the next round and start pulling back the points gap. It will be very difficult to beat Bobrychev this year but not impossible. I will be working with our riders intensely over the next few weeks to prepare for the next round at Farleigh Castle, another place where CCM has a lot of history and I know it would mean a lot for the Buildbase CCM Racing team to take a win there.”
CCM’s Austin Clews commented, “ All of us at CCM, in particular CCM Founder Alan Clews, are very proud to see Steve win the first race in such an exciting fashion, it’s great to see Steve take a win, he has worked so hard this year to get himself back on track and he deserves it. I have a lot of respect for both our riders, Tom has done very well to bounce back with two top 5 places today and he also is getting stronger each week.”
The Ryhader Evening MX held on Wednesday night enjoyed a large crowd who witnessed the Buildbase CCM factory duo of Tom Church and Stephen Sword battle for the honours with Honda’s Brad Anderson.
It was the scene of the return of Tom Church after a long mid season layoff, Tom intended to use the event to get some races under his belt and to use it as the first step in a three week programme to regain his race speed before his return to British Championship MX in three weeks time at Foxhills.
Stephen Sword on his factory Buildbase CCM took control of things in race one leaving Tom Church and current British MX1 Champion Brad Anderson to fight it out for 2nd and 3rd. Two laps from home brad made the pass on Steve for the win with Tom in a very respectable 3rd place finish.
Race two and Tom, not happy with his 3rd place in race 1 set the pace and disappeared to take a win making it a Buildbase CCM one two with team mate Stephen Sword in second and Brad in third.
The finish order in race three was Brad taking the win and the overall with TC in 2nd and SS in third.
The important “Dash for Cash” finished 1st Stephen Sword, 2nd Tom Church and 3rd Brad Anderson.
Dave Thorpe commented after the race “ this is great progress for Buildbase CCM Racing as a team, we are moving in the right direction. I am very pleased for Tom with this being his first meeting back after injury. There is a lot to do before Foxhills on the 25th July but everyone is happy with tonight’s results”
Having suffered the best part of the 2010 season with setbacks, Buildbase CCM Racing’s elite MX racers Stephen Sword and Tom Church can now see the way to getting back to full fitness before the next round of the British Maxxis MX1 Championship at Foxhills.
Tom Church recovering from an operation on his hand has been riding his factory Buildbase CCM this week and has had no reaction to the injury. This will now allow Tom to push on hard over the next few weeks and get himself back to full fitness. Buildbase CCM Racing’s Sporting Director David Thorpe said “ it has been a very difficult year for Tom, the injury on his hand has meant that he has not been able to perform at his best since the beginning of the season and he has had a 6 week layoff from riding. We are confident that we can get him back to full fitness soon so he can turn in the results we all know he is capable of.”
Tom commented “ my task is clear now, I need to practice hard and be ready for Foxhills on the 25th July, my season will begin again there and
I am focused on the challenge ahead.”
Meanwhile team mate Stephen Sword is making strides with shaking off the viral infection that has been sapping his energy all season. Dave Thorpe commented “ we have been working closely with Steve, building up his fitness step by step and both Stephen and I are happy with the progress so far.”
Stephen cemented his progress with 3 fine second places at Wednesday nights’ Patchquick Trophy . The racing was exciting and close with Brad Anderson taking the 3 wins. Stephen said” I feel I am coming through my fitness problems and every day I feel stronger on the bike. The Patchquick was a good indicator. I can feel the fight coming back in my racing. Foxhills is one of my favourite tracks and I have 3 weeks to prepare so I am looking forward to it.
Buildbase CCM’s Austin Clews commented “ It has been a frustrating year for the Buildbase CCM team with both riders not being able to perform at their full potential. Despite these setbacks, both Stephen and Tom have shown their professionalism and DT has carefully guided the pair of them back to fitness. It is very encouraging that despite Stephen’s setback he is still 2nd in the Championship. Buildbase CCM has set a clear target of a win in the MX1 class in 2010 and this is still very much on the cards, the season is only half way and there is still 300 points on the table so anything can happen. Both riders have had the full support of Buildbase CCM and the teams sponsors throughout these setbacks and we are looking forward to the team getting back to full strength and giving our sponsors a result they can be proud of. Stephens’ results at the Patchquick Trophy MX this week confirms we are on the right track to achieve that.”
It was not the best of weekends for the Buildbase CCM Racing MX1 team at round 4, the half way point of the Championship, with both riders nursing injuries and ailments that are currently holding the team back.
Tom Church visited his surgeon, Dr.Klaus on Thursday last week to see what the latest developments were after his operation 4 weeks ago. The doctor advised TC to rest for a further two weeks before another evaluation at that point. This meant Tom missing the action this weekend and the next two GP’s.
Stephen has been suffering from a viral infection that saps his energy. The Lyng circuit is a very demanding circuit and the top riders need to be at their fittest to pull off a win. Although SS’s blood tests now show he is clear of the virus, it is very much still affecting his fitness. CCM’s Sporting Director, Dave Thorpe commented “ This will take a few weeks before Stephen is back to full fitness. We are working closely with him to build up his energy levels in a slow controlled manner so we don’t trigger the viral infection again.”
It was all Stephen could do to focus on a top four placing in each race to minimise the points gap on series leader Bobrychev resulting in 4th place in each of the three races.
Thorpe continued “ We have to be pleased with the points from today, Stephen has kept himself in the hunt for the title and retained 2nd place in the Championship today. We will build on this over the coming weeks and will use the Red Bull event at Silverstone this coming weekend as another stepping stone. The GP’s are out for us for a few weeks and we will re-evaluate the position in three weeks from now. There are still 4 rounds remaining in the Maxxis and a further 300 points up for grabs so the season is far from over. CCM is still very much committed to winning the British MX1 title.”
The Buildbase CCM team returned to the 3rd round of the British Maxxis MX1 Championship at Duns in Scotland with Stephen Sword still suffering badly from a viral infection that is sapping his energy and Tom Church nursing a badly injured hand which has been affecting his riding for most of the season.
Despite the setbacks, both riders turned in respectable performances in all 3 races. The opening race saw Stephen in 5th on lap 1 with Tom in 8th. Stephen, keen to maximise his points on the day quickly made his way past Swanepole, Nunn then Bobrychev and chased Anderson home to finish 2nd at the flag. Tom battled on but could only manage 7th in race 1.
Race 2 saw the Buildbase CCM duo within the first 5 in turn 1. Sword again making his way up to second by lap 4 chased home Bobrychev to take second at the flag. Church was also on a run and moved up to 4th by the half way stage fending off Anderson until the very last lap when disaster struck and a stone snapped the chain on the Buildbase CCM giving Tom a DNF.
Race 3 and bobrychev and Sword were the leaders managing to pull away from the pack. By mid race Stephen was feeling the effects of the virus but had done enough in the early laps to secure his third 2nd place of the day giving him second overall and ending the day just 10 points behind Bobrychev in the hunt for the title. Tom was determined to finish the day with a decent result and made up for the 2nd race DNF with a fine 3rd place giving the Buildbase CCM team 2nd and 3rd place in the final outing.
Buildbase CCM’s Sporting Director, 4 times World MX Champion Dave Thorpe commented ” given the circumstances with the two riders fitness we have had our best result yet so we have to be happy with that. It was unfortunate for TC to break a chain in the second race today, without that the two riders would have finished 2nd and 3rd overall on the day which would have been even better.”
Thorpe further commented “ We have come away today still in the hunt for the title but both our riders are still not 100%. We need to rest Steve to give him the best chance of overcoming his viral infection and Tom will have his hand operated on later this week, so both riders will be out of action until the French GP. This will give the team chance to make further developments with the bikes and with both riders fit we have to be confident of our first win at the next Maxxis round at Lyng.
Team CCM arrived in Bulgaria at the weekend fresh from national success to open their 2010 GP campaign. Saturday’s qualifying race was a hectic affair for CCM giving both Stephen Sword and Tom Church 22nd and 19th respectively.
This left both riders with a lot to do in the races and the results didn’t get much better throughout the weekend with Tom opening his points tally with just 4 points and Stephen retiring from race 1 with a complete lack of energy.
CCM’s Sporting Director, Four Times World Champion, Dave Thorpe commented “ Today was a tough day for us, we have a lot to do to achieve our targets of top ten finishes. If you look at the quality of the MX1 class this year it could not be tougher. To see Tom racing around in the top 15 and then look at the quality of those behind him such as de Reuver and Strijbos further down the field just confirms how tough this year will be.”
“ If we look at the positives from the weekend, Tom was riding very quick for the first 25 – 30 minutes and was moving forward towards that top ten place until he started to feel some pain from his finger injury, we can work on that and I have every confidence that we can reach our goal.”
“It was a little different with Stephen, for the last month he has been complaining of a lack of energy and whilst the shorter Maxxis races do not highlight this so much, the longer GP races are a problem. Stephen had a blood test before Bulgaria which exposed a virus. This is a virus that saps energy, we knew this before the trip but wanted to see how it went at the race but it took its toll on him . The doctors have advised complete rest for a couple of weeks so that Stephen is completely fit for the Maxxis at Duns on May 2nd and so I have decided to pull Stephen out of the next two GP’s to allow just that.”
CCM Director Austin Clews commented “ I see that in Sunday morning practice Stephen was running top 10 lap times and Tom was making progress towards the top ten in race 1. We have to take positives from the weekend and know that we can build on this. It is unfortunate that Stephen has picked up a virus but it is the right thing to rest him as CCM’s number 1 priority for 2010 is to win the Maxxis MX1 Championship. We will focus on Tom for Italy and Valkenswaard and do all we can to help him get those top 10 results.”

Buildbase CCM Racings’ 2 MX1 GP riders Tom Church and Stephen Sword will head off to Bulgaria in the next week to begin their assault on the 2010 FIM World MX1 Championship.
Fresh from their success at British Championship level, both riders are prepared to begin their international season aboard their CCM CMX 450 MX bikes.
The new 2010 CMX450 has a revised suspension setting and improved engine power. Both riders are very happy with their bikes and the way they have made big strides in the early part of the season to reach good set ups on their bikes. The target for Buildbase CCM Racing for 2010 is to win the British MX1 Championship and to achieve a top 10 position in the World MX1 Championships.
Stephen Sword who is the current British MX2 Champion and is currently lying in 2nd place in the 2010 MX1 British Championship said “I feel very much at home in this team and we can see that every effort is being made by the team to give me what I need to achieve CCM’s targets both at home and on the GP scene. 2010 should be an exciting year for both me and the CCM team.”
Tom Church who is in his second year with Buildbase CCM Racing and finished top British rider in the 2009 MX1 World Championship commented “09 was a good learning year for Buildbase CCM Racing and we have a lot to build on from last season. This year the team are more focused and we can deal with issues more quickly and we are in a good position for the start of the season compared to 09, last year it took us a few months to get our act together but this year we are on it from the beginning”
Four times World MX Champion and Buildbase CCM’s Sporting Director said” we are looking forward to Bulgaria and the start of our international campaign, the most important thing is that we come away from this with a respectable result and injury free, it is a long season and there is a lot for Buildbase CCM Racing to achieve.”
